The Kingdom of Lo Trekking in Mustang

This great Tour of the Mustang offers a very complete view of the ancient kingdom of Lo with a total of thirteen days of walking in the so-called "restricted area". A well-researched itinerary allows you to discover small monasteries lost in a maze of chiselled rocks or fairy chimneys and to visit the last villages of the kingdom, a few hours of walk of Tibet.

Itinerary :

 

Day 1: Kathmandu

Arrival in Kathmandu, reception at the airport by a member of our team and transfer to hotel.

 

Day 2: Kathmandu - Pokhara

Visit Kathmandu in the morning. In the afternoon, flight to Pokhara. Walk along the lake shore.

 

Day 3: Pokhara - Jomosom - Kagbeni (3 hours walk)

Morning flight to Jomosom. Beginning of the trek to Kagbeni, an astonishing fortress village that marks the entrance to the Mustang.

 

Day 4: Kagbeni - Chhuksang (4 1/2 hours walk)

First village of the Mustang, Tangbe is a site of rare beauty: ancient fortress, labyrinth of alleys, alignment of chortens overlooking the river Mustang Khola. Continue to Chhuksang, fortified place formed by several hamlets. Very beautiful colored cliffs. Troglodyte Monastery.

 

Day 5: Chhuksang - Samar (4 hours walk)

Climb to Chele by first following the Mustang Khola. Visit the village perched on a piton controlling the valley. Continue towards Samar. Penitents of stone and path in balcony above an impressive gorge. Pass and descend towards Samar, typical village lined with poplars. Visit of the school and the monastery.

 

Day 6: Samar - Geling (6 hours walk)

Two possible routes: main trail (4h) or pilgrims' path (6h). For the second, steep descent into a gorge. Discovery of a sacred grotto where nature has carved an immense chorten in the rock. Up a beautiful canyon to Syangmochen. Col (3860 m) and downhill on Geling. Monastery.

 

Day 7: Geling - Tramar (5 hours walk)

Mounted towards a pass and descending on Gemi, pretty village in the middle of an oasis of greenery. Beautiful Tibetan houses. Continue to Tramar, a village nestled at the foot of large red rock.

 

Day 8: Tramar - Lo Gekar - Tsarang (7 hours walk)

Steep climb in a beautiful canyon to a pass. Descent to Lo Gekar; Monastery of the 11th c. Continue towards Tsarang through the fields of barley, mustard or sarrazin.

 

Day 9: Tsarang - Lo Manthang (5 hours walk)

Visit of the monastery of Tsarang. Beautiful paintings. Continue to Lo Manthang. Large chortens and troglodyte dwellings along the way. A last pass (3870 m) where prayer flags float and arrival in Lo Manthang, fortified capital of the ancient kingdom of Lo. Camp under the walls of the city.

 

Day 10: Lo Manthang (4 hours walk)

Discover the old citadel. Several monasteries with unique paintings including mandalas of great beauty. Labyrinth of the small streets, place of the royal palace ... Walk around Lo Manthang.

 

Day 11: Lo Manthang (6 hours walk)

Excursion around Lo Manthang, on foot or on horseback. Visit to remote villages north of the capital of the Mustang (Gharphu, Nyphu ...) Monasteries, troglodyte dwellings.

 

Day 12: Lo Manthang - Yara (6 hours walk)

Climb to a pass which dominates Lo Manthang followed by a path in crossing of which some passages require particular attention. Steep descent through fairy chimneys to Die. Crossing the river and climbing on Yara. Impressive lunar decoration, sculpted cliffs.

 

Day 13: Yara - Lori Gompa - Yara (5 hours walk)

Climb to Lori Gompa, away from the traditional ways. Small monastery perched in an impressive site; Temple dug into the rock and surprising paintings. Return to Yara by another way.

 

Day 14: Yara - Tanggye (7 hours walk)

Long plateau and steep descent to cross the torrent. New climb to a pass (3860 m) and diving through fairy chimneys. Visit of Tanggye; Monastery, magnificent chortens alignment.

 

Day 15: Tanggye - Chhuksang (8 hours walk)

Long stage with a pass at 4100 m. Crossing of a plateau; Very nice view on the right bank of the Mustang Khola and the massif of Annapurnas. Beautiful mineral landscapes. Long descent on Chhuksang.

 

Day 16: Chhuksang - Muktinath (7 hours walk)

Departure to Tethang, a beautiful fortified village. Mounted in a talweg with some pastures in the middle of the rocks. Passage of a pass; Exit of the Mustang and discovery of all the snowy massifs of Annapurnas and Dhaulagiri. Descent to Muktinath.

 

Day 17: Muktinath - Jomsom (5 hours walk)

Last and long descent to Jomsom. Crossing the fortified village of Jarkhot.

 

Day 18: Jomsom - Tatopani (4 hours drive)

Departure by jeep to Tatopani; Stop in the beautiful takhali villages of Marpha and Tuckuche. After Kalopani, the trail enters a narrow gorge wedged between the massifs of Annapurna I and Daulaghiri.

 

Day 19: Tatopani - Pokhara - Kathmandu

Road to Pokhara. Meals in town and flight to Kathmandu in the afternoon.

 

Day 20: Kathmandu

Free day. Airport transfer.

*This price does not include the cost of the "Mustang special permit". To date: $ 650 for 13 days in "restricted area", to be paid locally when you arrive in Kathmandu.
