Monasteries of Tibet Tour

For lovers of Tibetan culture this tour offers, monasteries with golden roofs, several hundred years old temples, unique paintings and fascinating , vibrant world of faith and prayer to which thousands of pilgrims coming from all over Tibet. Here you can explore a beautiful environment, mineral plateau dotted with turquoise lakes which reflect the snowy heads of the giant peaks around.

Attention: You must be in Kathmandu 3 days before departure to obtain the Tibetan visa, the Chinese Embassy being open only 3 mornings a week.

 

Itinerary :

 

Day 1: KATHMANDU

Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel. First discovery of the city.

 

Day 2: KATHMANDU

Visit of some remarkable sites of the valley: Bhaktapur, Patan and Swayanbu, one of the great Buddhist stupas of the valley.

 

Day 3: KATHMANDU - ZHANGMU or NYALAM (departure obligatory Saturday or Tuesday)

Departure 5 hours by road through traditional Nepalese villages. At the Nepalese border, formalities, then crossing the "Bridge of Friendship" for the first Chinese formalities (short).

Climb to Zhangmu or Nyalam for the 2nd Chinese customs check. Overnight in Zhangmu or Nyalam at 30 km.

 

Day 4: ZHANGMU or NYALAM - TINGRI

Departure for Tingri, passing through the passes of Nyalam and Lalung where you will stop to enjoy a magnificent panorama. Very beautiful road throughout which you can admire high summits

 

Day 5: TINGRI - SAKYA

Departure to Sakya and visit the monastery, located 26 km from the road. The city extends to the heights of the small valley, along the river Trom. The monastery was built in 1073, it is the center of the Sakya order of Tibetan Buddhism, it contains frescoes and a number of works of art perhaps one of the most important of all Tibet. One is struck by the dark gray color of the buildings. A large part of the monastery was completely destroyed during the Cultural Revolution.

 

Day 6: SAKYA - SHIGATSE

Depart for Shigatse, passing at 5.220 m. Shigatse is the capital of the Tsang province and the second largest city in Tibet.

 

Day 7: SHIGATSE

Visit the monastery of Tashilumpo, the barkhor around the monastery and the market.

 

Day 8: SHIGATSE - GANDCHEN

Departure to the monastery of Gangchen, Night at the guest house of the monastery.

 

Day 9: GANDCHEN - GYANTSE

Road to Gyantse. Visit of the monasteries and the famous Kumbum of Gyantsé, the great cultural treasure of Tibet. Visit numerous chapels with exceptional paintings and statues.

 

Day 10: GYANTSE - NAGARTSE - RALUG

Departure for the monasteries of Nagartse and Ralug.

 

Day 11: RALUG - LHASSA

Departure to Lhasa by Lake Yamdrok, visiting the Samding Monastery, near Lake Dumo-Tso.

 

Day 12: LHASSA

Visit of the Potala, residence of the Dalai Lamas (numerous chapels, paintings, sculptures and extraordinary chortens) and Jokhang, the most famous temple of Lhasa, where many pilgrims from the most remote villages visit, Kham or Amdo . Walk along the Barkhor, between lively boutiques and Tibetan pilgrims.

 

Day 13: LHASSA

Visit the great monastic universities of Sera and Drépung. These monasteries, famous for their temples, houses and alleys, welcomed thousands of monks until 1959. Return to Lhasa. Visit of the Dalai Lama's Summer Palace. Last round of Barkhor.

 

Day 14: LHASSA

Round-trip to the monastery of Tsurphu.

 

Day 15: LHASSA - GANDEN - TREK

Departure from Lhassa to the monastery of Ganden, and Departure for a trek of 6 days in direction of Samyé, passing by hebu, yama do (monastery and cave), Tsotup Chu valley, Chitu The pass and Nyango. Meeting of small villages on the way.

 

Day 16 to Day 19: TREK:

 

Day 20: TREK - SAMYE

Arrival of the trek to Samye, night at the Guest house of the monastery.

 

Day 21: SAMYE - TSANGPO

Crossing the river, about 2 hours by boat, and departure for Tsangpo.

 

Day 22: TSANGPO

Visit of the oldest castle of Tibet and departure for Gongar, en route visit of the monastery of Mindroling.

 

Day 23: TSANGPO - KATHMANDU (Departure on Tuesday or Saturday only)

Early morning transfer to the airport (1/2 hours) and plane to Kathmandu.

 

Day 24: KATHMANDU AND RETURN FLIGHT

Free day in Kathmandu. Transfer to the airport.
