Potala Tour

An ideal program for a first discovery of the land of snow. Temples and monasteries, chorens and Tibetan villages dot the stages of this tour. The landscapes are often exceptional: arid plateaus, tormented reliefs, turquoise lakes and snow-capped peaks. A complete panorama of the natural and cultural riches of a millennial Tibet.

Itinerary :

 

Day 1: Kathmandu

Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel. First discovery of the city.

 

Day 2: Kathmandu

Visit of some remarkable sites of the valley: Bhaktapur, Patan and Swayanbu, one of the great Buddhist stupas of the valley.

 

Day 3: Kathmandu - Lhasa - Tsethang (Departure on Tuesdays or Saturdays only)

Flight in the morning. Arrival at Gonggar airport and drive to Tsethang.

 

Day 4: Tsethang - Yumbulhakang - Samye - Lhasa (3 hours drive)

Visit the fortress of Yumbulhakang which was founded by the first mythical king of Tibet. Crossing the Tsangpo in ferry, Visit Samyé, the first monastery built in Tibet by King Trisong Detsen. Walk to the hermitages that overlook the valley. Drive to Lhasa.

 

Day 5: Lhasa

Visit of the Potala, residence of the Dalai Lamas (numerous chapels, paintings, sculptures and extraordinary chortens) and Jokhang, the most famous temple of Lhasa, where many pilgrims from the most remote villages, Kham or Amdo . Walk along the Barkhor, between lively boutiques and Tibetan pilgrims.

 

Day 6: Lhasa

Visit to the great monastic universities of Sera and Drépung. These monasteries, famous with their temples, houses and alleys, welcomed thousands of monks until 1959. Return to Lhasa. Visit of the Dalai Lama's Summer Palace. Last round of Barkhor.

 

Day 7: Lhasa - Gyantse (4 hours drive)

Return to the Karo La, at the foot of the cool face of the Netsekangsang. Arrival at Gyantsé. Visit the monasteries and the famous Kumbum of Gyantsé, the great cultural treasure of Tibet. Very numerous chapels with exceptional paintings and statues.

 

Day 8: Gyantse - Shalu - Shigatse (3 hours drive and 2 hours walk)

Continuation to Shalu, monastery where lived Butön Rimpoche. Unique paintings, mix of styles newar and Chinese Yuan dynasty. Arrival at Shigatsé.Visit of the immense monastic city of Tashilumpo, seat of the Panchen Lamas. Temples to the impressive chortens, immense assembly hall. Walk in the old market and on the path of kora overlooking the monastery and the valley of Shigatse.

 

Day 9: Shigatse

Visit of the huge monastic city of Tashilumpo, home of the Panchen Lamas. Temples with impressive chortens. Walk in the old market and on the way to kora (2h) overlooking the monastery and the valley. Beautiful panorama.

 

Day 10: Shigatse - Sakya - Shegar (6 hours drive)

Road to Sakya, monastery reminiscent of Mongolian fortresses, impressive library and magnificent assembly hall. Continuation of the trip to Shegar. Very beautiful landscapes. Visit of the village at the foot of the fortress whose walls run on the hill.

 

Day 11: Shegar - Old Tingri - Kasa (7 hours drive)

Continue to Nyalam. Exceptional view on the Himalayan chain. Adjacent to the border with Nepal. Stop in Kasa.

 

Day 12: Kasa - Kathmandu (5 hours drive)

Chinese and Nepalese formalities at the border and return on Kathmandu. Free afternoon.

 

Day 13: Kathmandu and return flight

Free day in Kathmandu. Transfer to the airport.
